Burkina Faso

“Land of Honest Men”

Why Burkina Faso?

Burkina Faso,  is a small, very poor, landlocked country in Western Africa, home to over 22 million people. A former French colony, it gained independence as Upper Volta in 1960. On 2 August 1984, President Thomas Sankara’s changed the country’s name from “Upper Volta” to “Burkina Faso” or land of the honest men.

Years of political instability led to the crumbling of a 27-year regime in 2014. Since then, the country has suffered recurrent attacks, including on schools, by armed groups. As the security situation deteriorates, more than 1,400,000 people have become internally displaced. Burkina Faso also faces a complex and severe humanitarian crisis caused by challenges in infant mortality, malnutrition, education, employment, food security, conflict, COVID-19, climate disasters, limited natural resources.

In Burkina Faso, over 5.5 million people are now in need of humanitarian assistance, More than half of them are children.

Hungry For Change

Captain Ibrahim Traore was officially appointed as president of Burkina Faso on October 21st 2022

Ibrahim Traoré addressed the people of Burkina Faso on 11 Dec 2022

“I call on all Burkinabè to change their behavior, to review our values, because this battle for total independence goes through the war that we are waging with arms. But I said it earlier, by the economy as well. This battle on the economic side necessarily involves the fight against corruption. This fight is also on. Our fight will only stop when all the children of Burkina Faso have enough to eat and sleep peacefully in their country. We are committed to this and this fight, we are going to lead it. Our hope is even greater. We have no doubts about what will happen and the future of this battle. Stay confident, stay united, stay mobilized behind the defense and security forces, stay united and mobilized behind our valiant VDPs, and there is hope, because we will not give up, we will go to the end of this fight to the total independence of our homeland.

I cannot end my remarks without wishing a speedy recovery to all the victims, all the wounded of this barbarity and praying again that the souls of the deceased rest in peace.

Thank you dear compatriots.”
